If Neil Armstrong were my uncle
I'd probably have a lot of stories to tell
I'd have pictures in my room
Of him walking on the moon
And a bucket full of lunar rocks to sell
With the money that I made
I'd build a rocket
Bigger than the famous Saturn V
It'd take me and my friends
To Mars and back again
And somehow I know we'd all survive
My imaginary uncle
He landed on the moon
And while Buzz was dancing round him
He was contemplating life
Thinking of his wife
And I was only ten
But I’d go right back again
If Neil Armstrong were my uncle
Collins got the raw end of the deal
But like man and hero, took the wheel
And while my imaginary uncle
Was stealing the show
Collins made sure they all got home
My imaginary uncle
He landed on the moon
And while Buzz was dancing round him
He was contemplating life
Thinking of his wife
And I was only ten
But I’d go right back again
If Neil Armstrong were my uncle

She named her cat Tom Petty
It was the least that she could do
For the mangy tom she found
In the streets of north Seattle
As house guest, he was fine
For a while, anyway
'Til he started to get restless
In the apartment all day
So he made his break on Thursday
Through the window I suppose
She left it open on the morning
For the breeze
Tom Petty’s on the run
A refugee from an American Girl
She’s got his photo up
On the telephone poles
But I don’t think he’s coming home
She's feeling so low now
(Breakdown)
She feels like a loser
(Even the losers)
He's just an old tom cat
(I need to know)
Why’s he treat me like that
(Don't, don't do me like that)
Danny came to visit
With a smile and a joint
They smoked it by the window
In the sun
She told him ‘bout a vision
She had the night before
When her long day of searching
Was done
She said saw that cat alive
Among the wild flowers
And it comforts her to know
That he was free

Venus de Milo
03:22
|
|||
Well, he gave me a ride
In his beat up Ford
I had no idea
What I was headed toward
We traveled through the prairies
The horses and farms
When I noticed the bobble head
Without any arms
I said kind of hate to ask
But who’s that lady on your dash?
He said it’s my own private
Venus de Milo
She’s the reason I got
This tattoo of Ohio
On the back of my neck
And if you haven’t been there yet
Let me tell you ‘bout Columbus
Columbus, Ohio
You see he met his only girlfriend
In front of a museum
She was with a bunch of friends
Climbing out of a van
He helped each one down
Gently to the curb
It’s there they fell in love
Without saying a word
And they wandered through exhibits
Of Ancient Greece
While strolling through the gift shop
He discovered the piece
Now she’s on his dashboard
Nodding her head
And I’m wondering about Columbus
And the things they did
He said Columbus Ohio
Is that kind of town
Grabs you by the neck
And then it throws you down
He claims he can’t remember
The reason he left
Now his only concern
Is what he’s got left...
And that’s his own private
Venus de Milo
She’s the reason he’s got
That tattoo of Ohio
On the back of his neck
If you haven’t been there yet
Let me tell you ‘bout Columbus
Columbus, Ohio
And the Venus de Milo
From Columbus, Ohio

Piper Tri-Pacer
03:53
|
|||
In the far reaches of the airport
Where the tarmac turns to dust
There's an old Piper Tri-pacer
Whose steel frame is starting to rust
Her fabric is worn
And her color is gone
She's faded like someone
Grown old
But she's pushing against
The tie down ropes
And it looks like
She wants to roll
Someday
I'm going to buy that plane
I'm going to fix her up right
I'm going to point her down the runway
And we're going to fly
Out over the ocean
Banking to the left and right
Gonna see the world
Tonight
Why would you wait
For another day
When a hill of high pressure
Exposed the blue sky
And beckoned for someone
To go for a ride
Why is it so
Clear in my mind
I pull on the throttle
And the Lycoming wakes
The prop starts to spin
And I feel the seat shake
Someday
I'm going to buy that plane
I'm going to fix her up right
I'm going to point her down the runway
And we're going to fly
Over the ocean
Banking to the left and right
Gonna see the world
Tonight

Rio Grande
03:17
|
|||
My mother took my hand
And led me down the path
She said it was time to go
On the bus
I wiped the window with my hand
And watched the tragedy unfold
Unfold, like a carpet down the stairs
With paparazzi everywhere
But instead of a movie show
They just came to watch us go
Headed north
Like a migratory bird
I've got my wings on the jet stream
And my finger on my pulse
My heart is beating
And I hear my mother's, too
We'll be free when we land
In the wide-open ranches
Above the Rio Grande
We met my uncle in Mexico City
Thousands of people were there
He gave my mother
Some advice I couldn't hear
And then it was time to go
Headed north
Like a migratory bird
I've got my wings on the jet stream
And my finger on my pulse
My heart is beating
And I hear my mother's, too
We'll be free when we land
In those wide open ranches
Above the Rio Grande

Eddie's Shovel
03:37
|
|||
Eddie’s got a shovel
Hanging on the wall in his garage
He’s going to dig himself a tunnel
Stretching all the way to the Taj Mahal
I don’t know what he’s trying to pull
He’s a unique individual
I don’t know if he serious
Or laughing at me
Is he laughing at me?
Eddie’s mother tells me
That she really likes the way that I spend
My time
I don’t think about it
‘Cause I always kind of do whatever’s on My mind
Hanging out with Eddie
Always makes me feel better
Kind of like when a girl likes me
And I let her be my friend
To the end of the day
I ask her, hey-eeyay
Have you ever met Eddie
And she says, hey-eeyay
I really should
Sometimes peace
Is where you least expect it
In a garage by a highway exit
Eddie’s got a shovel
Hanging on the wall in his garage
He’s going to dig himself a tunnel
Stretching all the way to the Taj Mahal
I don’t know how I ever got elected
Me and my broken electric guitar
That I bought and I learned
How to play for Eddie
But I sing, hey-eeyay
Have you ever met Eddie
I say, hey-eeyay
You really should

Pesos In Your Pocket
03:40
|
|||
At the kitchen table
We'd talk and talk and talk
Till things got crazy
Then you'd go out for a walk
You'd return
With snowflakes on your lashes
And a smile on your face
To change my mind
It's been years and years
Since you told me what you wanted
Since you told that boy in Mexico goodbye
All this time
I thought it was all my fault
But now I know for sure
That it's not
And yes I know
That it's beautiful down there
With the mountains
And in the plaza
Drinking coffee without care
Like you say
There's no way
That I'm ever going back
This is why
I bottled your confession
And placed it on a table
By the fireplace
Yet I'm concerned
You’ve got Pesos in your pocket
I can hear them jingle
When you walk

Kansas City
03:27
|
|||
Sitting here in Kansas City
Staring at a trailer park
Up above me stars are shining
But they’re all far apart
Distance seems to be an issue for me
I can’t seem to see
Very far from where I am
In Kansas City
You’ve got time to tell me things
That only I can hear
In my mind they crystalize
And then they disappear
I can listen carefully
I understand our history
And how we got here
In Kansas City
It takes a long time, waiting
But I’m very good at that
And as the sun is setting
There’s a vampire bat
Chasing me around
Distance is an issue for me
I can’t seem to see
Very far from where I am
In Kansas City

Roberta (Until Now)

Roberta
Who’re going to talk to?
When you walk into the room
And you’re scanning all the faces
And they start to take their places
At the table for a meal
Things are different
When Ralph was here
He could make a friend
In fourteen minutes flat
It didn’t matter where he sat
There was always conversation
That you could steal
But what if you stole time
And dropped it in your purse
Saved it for a day
When things got worse
Then you could go back
And you could see
All the things
You couldn’t be
Until now
Roberta
Who’re going to talk to?
When you walk into that room
I hope you’ll look my way
And I hope that you will stay
The way you are today
Because you turned back time
And dropped it in your purse
Saved it for a day
When things got worse
And you went back
So you could see
All the things
You couldn’t be
Until now

Bonus Track: Delmar
03:33
|
|||
I heard you built a swimming pool
And you call it your lagoon
You spend nights floating on your back
Gazing at the moon
Are you wishing on a star?
I bet you wish they weren’t so far
From that hamlet in New York
And that town you call Delmar
I took the train from Boston to New York
Rocking back and forth along the shore
Just past New Haven I start to understand
Why you up and left and changed your plans
I think you’re wishing on a star
You’ve got this new idea of who you are
That’s why you moved so far
To that town you call Delmar
You built a fence around your home
To keep the undesirables out
But I wonder if there’s something else you fear
Something in your heart that leads to doubt
We met downtown on Seventh Avenue
The Village Vanguard was alive
Between the sets you tried to explain
How serendipity is just a lie
We’re all wishing on a star
Trying to understand just who we are
While you drive in your car
To that town you call Delmar
