This song features my Gibson SG, played through my Fender Blues Jr amp, with a little of distortion from my pedals. The bass is played on my Yamaha bass, directly into my preamp, and into Cubase.
Drums are live drums, played by me, which is pretty apparent if you listen carefully. The organ sample is from a new VST plugin from Acoustic Samples, called B5. It provides a VST interface that mimics the drawbars and Leslie speakers of a Hammond B3. I was originally using a plugin called VB3 from Genuine Soundware and Instruments (GSI). However, when I upgraded to Cubase 9, the 32-bit version of that plugin was no longer an option.
The horns in the bridge are samples from the "EastWest Quantum Leap Symphonic Orchestra - Gold Edition". I struggled with these initially, but finally came up with what I think was a decent arrangement of the horns, and I settled on two solo trumpet samples, with a low tuba harmony to give it some depth and character.
Thanks to my wife, Sheryl, for pointing out that I originally had too much reverb and other effects on the lead vocal. Based on her advice, I went with a much dryer lead vocal, which gave the whole song a cleaner sound, I hope.
lyrics
At the kitchen table
We'd talk and talk and talk
Till things got crazy
Then you'd go out for a walk
You'd return
With snowflakes on your lashes
And a smile on your face
To change my mind
It's been years and years
Since you told me what you wanted
Since you told that boy in Mexico goodbye
All this time
I thought it was all my fault
But now I know for sure
That it's not
And yes I know
That it's beautiful down there
With the mountains
And in the plaza
Drinking coffee without care
Like you say
There's no way
That I'm ever going back
This is why
I bottled your confession
And placed it on a table
By the fireplace
Yet I'm concerned
You’ve got Pesos in your pocket
I can hear them jingle
When you walk
