My mother took my hand
And led me down the path
She said it was time to go
On the bus
I wiped the window with my hand
And watched the tragedy unfold
Unfold, like a carpet down the stairs
With paparazzi everywhere
But instead of a movie show
They just came to watch us go
Headed north
Like a migratory bird
I've got my wings on the jet stream
And my finger on my pulse
My heart is beating
And I hear my mother's, too
We'll be free when we land
In the wide-open ranches
Above the Rio Grande
We met my uncle in Mexico City
Thousands of people were there
He gave my mother
Some advice I couldn't hear
And then it was time to go
Headed north
Like a migratory bird
I've got my wings on the jet stream
And my finger on my pulse
My heart is beating
And I hear my mother's, too
We'll be free when we land
In those wide open ranches
Above the Rio Grande
